Llamas arrive at Ballindalloch
2008
Meet Ruby, Raspberry and Rose, three llamas given to Mr & Mrs Russell to mark their Ruby Wedding. The remainder of the herd belongs to Gerry Thompson and Lucy Dolan, from nearby Knockando, who are beginning a llama trekking business in the Cairngorms. In Central and South America, llamas are still widely used as pack animals, as well as for meat and fibre production. Llama hair has a hollow shaft so is naturally warm, as well as being very soft and lanolin-free; the fine undercoat can be used for garments while the coarser outer guard hair is traditionally used for rugs, wall-hangings and ropes. Besides being very curious and friendly, these members of the camel family are also very intelligent, and can be trained to perform simple tasks. They like to live in a herd, taking care of other group members, and will often hum to each other as a form of communication. When agitated, a llama will lay its ears back, and may spit if further provoked. A baby llama is known as a 'cria' - you may be lucky enough to see one here, depending on the time of year. |
