General James Grant

General
James Grant is perhaps the most famous of the Macpherson-Grants and certainly the most colourful.
He enjoyed a distinguished military career, fighting in the American Wars of Independence. In
1763, he was appointed Governor of Florida, a position he held until 1771.
At Ballindalloch, he added two new wings in 1770, one to the south where the Drawing Room is
situated and another to the north. General Grant was one of the most noted bon viveurs
of his day, and the north wing was added to house his favourite French chef. When travelling, he
was always accompanied by his cooks and it was his custom "not to hazard his palate on any
dish until its quality had been previously ascertained."
His unique personality added a lively component to late 18th century Scottish society.
